The useful question is not “what number is best?” It is “how many people can we manage cleanly while still making the extra buying power worthwhile?”
A five-person family pool and a 45-person workplace pool can both work. They are just solving different problems. The small group keeps the administration simple and leaves each member with a much larger share. The larger group turns modest individual contributions into a much bigger ticket budget.
For a recurring office lottery pool, the practical limit is usually set by record keeping rather than math. If the organizer cannot quickly answer who paid, who was included, which tickets were bought and what share each person owns, the pool is already too casual for its size.

Mega Millions jackpot odds are 1 in 290,472,336. The higher ticket price means the same pool budget buys fewer Mega Millions entries than Powerball entries.
The calculator treats purchased tickets as distinct. If the pool buys duplicate combinations, the number of unique jackpot combinations covered is lower.
This is where pool-size math becomes much more obvious.
If 45 coworkers each put in $10 for one drawing, the pool has $450. At the current base ticket prices, that buys up to 225 Powerball plays or 90 Mega Millions plays, before any optional add-ons. Each equal member owns 1/45 of a pool prize, or about 2.22%.
That is the trade-off in one example: the work pool gives the group a much larger stack of entries than one person would normally buy for $10, but a jackpot is also split 45 ways.

Ten people can be a practical small-pool size because the roster is still manageable while the group has ten times one member's contribution to spend. Whether it is right for your group depends on the contribution, game and how much sharing you are comfortable with.
