DO YOU NEED A WRITTEN AGREEMENT?

Why it is worth putting your syndicate rules in writing

A syndicate can be very informal, especially between family, friends or workmates. That usually works fine until two people remember the rules differently. Writing them down gives everyone the same record before there is ever a winning ticket to argue about.

What is worth putting in writing? Who is in the syndicate, what each person pays, when payment is due, who buys or controls the ticket, what happens if somebody misses a payment, and how any winnings are shared.
SIMPLE AGREEMENT

For a normal small syndicate, this is probably all you need. Fill it in together, make sure everyone understands the rules, then keep the signed copy with your ticket and payment records.

Print this form only — the rest of the webpage will not print.

KEEP IT WITH THE EVIDENCE

Keep the agreement with your payment and ticket records

Keep the signed form somewhere sensible, but also keep the records showing who paid and which tickets or digital entries were actually bought for each draw.

One important timing point: the agreement should exist before a winning draw. HMRC Statement of Practice E14 specifically refers to syndicate winnings being paid according to an agreement drawn up before the win.
FAQ

Common questions about these free syndicate forms

Do you legally need a written agreement for a lottery syndicate?

Not always. Informal arrangements can exist, but a written agreement is usually much easier to understand, administer and rely on if there is ever a disagreement about members, payments, tickets or winnings.

Are both lottery syndicate agreement forms free?

Yes. Both forms are completely free to print or save as a PDF. There is no account, email sign-up or payment required.

Which form should we use?

For most small family, friends or workplace syndicates, start with the simple form. Use the detailed agreement if the group has unequal shares, changing members or wants clearer rules for missed payments, ticket proof and eligibility.

Can I save the form as a PDF instead of printing it?

Yes. Choose the print button for the form, then select your browser or device’s “Save as PDF” option instead of a physical printer.

Is this legal advice?

No. These are practical record templates based on public UK guidance. A disputed, high-value, unusual or commercially operated arrangement may justify independent legal or tax advice.
