New York Powerball Tax Calculator: How Much Would You Keep?
Estimate a New York Powerball cash payout after federal income tax, New York State tax and — where applicable — New York City or Yonkers tax. See withholding separately from the estimated final tax bill.
New York Lottery Withholding Is Not the Same as Your Final New York Tax
A large Powerball prize can have federal withholding, New York State withholding and, for some residents, New York City or Yonkers withholding. Those amounts are collected up front. Your estimated final income-tax liability is a separate calculation.
Start with the cash option
The advertised Powerball jackpot is the annuity estimate. If you choose the one-time cash option, that cash payout is the starting point for this calculator.
Separate withholding from tax
The calculator shows initial withholding as money already set aside, then estimates the final federal and New York liabilities separately so withholding is not counted twice.
Your New York location matters
Living in New York City or Yonkers can add a local income-tax layer that does not apply to a New York State resident living elsewhere.
Calculator assumption: New York resident estimates assume the stated other income is also New York income, use the applicable 2026 standard deductions, and do not include itemized deductions, dependent exemptions, credits or special New York additions/subtractions. The result is an estimate, not a tax return.

New York Powerball Withholding Rates
New York Lottery publishes federal, New York State and applicable local withholding rates for qualifying prizes. These are amounts withheld from payment, not a promise that the winner's final federal or New York tax return will equal those percentages.
| Tax layer | Current lottery withholding | Who it can affect | How this calculator treats it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal | 24% | Qualifying lottery winnings | Shown separately from estimated final federal income tax. |
| New York State | 10.90% | Qualifying New York Lottery prizes | Shown separately from estimated final New York State liability. |
| New York City | 3.876% | Applicable NYC residents | Compared with an estimated NYC resident tax attributable to the prize. |
| Yonkers | 1.82575% | Applicable Yonkers residents | Compared with an estimated Yonkers resident surcharge attributable to the prize. |
Why 10.90% can look familiar: 10.90% is both the current New York Lottery state withholding rate and New York's top 2026 marginal state income-tax rate. That does not mean the final state tax is calculated by simply multiplying every dollar of the prize by 10.90%.
How New York State Taxes a Powerball Win
For a full-year New York resident, lottery winnings included in federal adjusted gross income are generally included for New York income-tax purposes. New York uses progressive tax brackets, and its high-income supplemental tax can recapture the benefit of lower brackets.
What the calculator includes
- The 2026 New York State rate schedule for the selected filing status.
- The applicable 2026 New York standard deduction used by this estimate.
- The 2026 high-income supplemental/recapture calculation where applicable.
- Other taxable income entered by the user, so the prize is not treated as the winner's only possible income.
- A tax-attributable-to-prize approach: estimated tax with the prize minus estimated tax without it.
New York City and Yonkers Can Add Another Tax Layer
New York State residents do not all have the same local tax position. New York City has its own resident income tax, while Yonkers residents can face a resident income-tax surcharge tied to New York State tax.
The calculator does not add a NYC or Yonkers resident tax layer.
The calculator estimates NYC resident income tax attributable to the prize and shows the 3.876% lottery withholding separately.
The calculator estimates the Yonkers resident surcharge attributable to the prize and shows the 1.82575% lottery withholding separately.
What If You Win Powerball in New York but Live in Another State?
A qualifying New York Lottery prize can still be New York-source income for a nonresident winner. The winner's home state can then have its own rules, including possible credits for tax paid to New York. That is why this page does not present one precise “final take-home” amount for an out-of-state resident.
New York ticket
The New York source of the prize can matter even when the winner's permanent home is in another state.
Home-state rules
The residence state may tax the winner under its own rules and may provide a credit or other treatment for New York tax.
No false precision
Select “Outside New York State” in the calculator and MLL will show the federal estimate and published New York withholding, then flag the final state position for review.
For a specific New York-ticket / other-state-residence combination, use the broader Powerball Tax Calculator as those state combinations are added.
New York Powerball Tax FAQs
How much does New York withhold from a Powerball jackpot?
For qualifying New York Lottery prizes, the published withholding includes 24% federal withholding and 10.90% New York State withholding. Applicable New York City residents can also have 3.876% withheld, while applicable Yonkers residents can have 1.82575% withheld. Withholding is not necessarily the same as final tax liability.
Is 10.90% the final New York State tax on the whole Powerball cash option?
Not automatically. New York uses progressive state income-tax brackets and a supplemental high-income calculation. The 10.90% figure is the current New York Lottery state withholding rate and the top marginal state rate, but the calculator estimates final state liability using the 2026 schedule rather than simply applying 10.90% to every dollar.
Does New York City tax Powerball winnings?
A New York City resident can face NYC resident income tax on taxable income including lottery winnings. The calculator therefore adds an estimated NYC layer for the NYC-resident selection and keeps the 3.876% lottery withholding visible as a separate figure.
Does Yonkers tax Powerball winnings?
Yonkers residents can face a resident income-tax surcharge. For the assumptions on this page, the calculator estimates the surcharge attributable to the prize and displays the current New York Lottery Yonkers withholding separately.
What if I buy the winning Powerball ticket in New York but live elsewhere?
A qualifying New York Lottery prize can be treated as New York-source income for a nonresident. Your home state may also have tax rules and possible credits. Because that interaction varies by state, this New York page does not invent a final home-state result.
Does filing status change New York Powerball tax?
Yes. Both federal and New York State rate schedules differ by filing status, and standard deductions differ as well. The calculator supports Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately and Head of Household.
Why does the calculator ask about other taxable income?
Federal and New York income taxes are progressive. Other income can affect the brackets that apply to the prize. The calculator estimates tax attributable to the Powerball payout by comparing the modeled tax with the prize against the modeled tax without it.
Does New York tax the advertised jackpot or the cash option?
The advertised Powerball jackpot is the estimated annuity amount. If you choose the one-time cash option, the cash payout is the relevant starting amount for this cash-payout estimate. The dedicated annuity calculator will treat the annual payments separately.
Can I avoid New York tax by moving after I win?
Do not assume so. The source of a New York Lottery prize, residency timing and the laws of the residence state can all matter. Changing residence after a winning event does not automatically erase an existing New York tax obligation.
Is this New York Powerball tax calculator exact?
No. It is an educational estimate using the assumptions stated on the page. New York additions and subtractions, dependent exemptions, deductions, credits, part-year residency, trusts, entities and other circumstances can change a real tax return. A jackpot winner should obtain professional federal and New York tax advice.
