Montana Powerball Tax Calculator: How Much Would You Keep?
Estimate a Montana Powerball cash payout after federal and State taxes. Montana Lottery currently withholds 5.9% State tax, while Montana's 2026 top ordinary individual income-tax rate is 5.65%.
Montana Lottery Withholds 5.9% Even Though the 2026 Top Ordinary Rate Is 5.65%
Montana Lottery's current claim page still requires 5.9% State withholding on prizes greater than $5,000. Montana's current temporary individual income-tax law, however, uses a 5.65% top ordinary rate through December 31, 2026.
Claim-stage withholding
The Lottery takes 5.9% up front as a State income-tax payment.
2026 top ordinary rate
Montana taxable income above the filing-status threshold is taxed at 5.65% in 2026.
Possible State overpayment
Because withholding can exceed the modeled final Montana tax, part of the 5.9% may ultimately become an overpayment or refund, depending on the winner's full return.
On $100 million of cash, the difference is roughly a quarter-million dollars. The calculator therefore shows Montana withholding and final Montana liability separately instead of treating 5.9% as the final State tax.

Montana planning model begins with 2026 federal taxable income and assumes no special Montana additions or subtractions. Capital-gain rates, age-65 subtraction, credits and special State deductions are not modeled.
Montana Powerball Withholding: 24% Federal + 5.9% State
Montana Lottery's current claim page says U.S. citizens furnishing Social Security Numbers have 24% federal tax and 5.9% Montana State tax withheld from prizes greater than $5,000.
| Tax layer | Withholding | Final 2026 treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Federal | 24% | Advance payment only; final federal liability is progressive. |
| Montana | 5.9% | Advance State payment; ordinary 2026 income above the bracket is taxed at 5.65%, so withholding can exceed final State tax. |
Withholding is not deducted twice. The calculator uses the final tax liability to calculate take-home, then shows whether the up-front withholding was short or high.
Montana's 2026 Ordinary Income-Tax Rates Are 4.7% and 5.65%
Montana's temporary 2025 Code provision remains in force through the end of 2026. The rate structure is much simpler than the pre-2024 Montana system: one lower band at 4.7%, followed by a 5.65% top band.
| Filing status | 4.7% band | 5.65% band |
|---|---|---|
| Single | First $47,500 of Montana taxable income | Above $47,500 |
| Married Filing Separately | First $47,500 | Above $47,500 |
| Head of Household | First $71,250 | Above $71,250 |
| Married Filing Jointly | First $95,000 | Above $95,000 |
Montana starts with federal taxable income
Montana Code Β§15-30-2120 starts with federal taxable income before State-specific additions and subtractions.
Federal standard deduction flows through
In the simplified model, the 2026 federal standard deduction is already reflected before Montana applies its rates.
The law changes again next year
From January 1, 2027, current Montana law lowers the top ordinary rate to 5.4% and increases the bracket thresholds.
This page is year-specific. A 2027 Montana Powerball calculation should use the tax rates and thresholds in force for 2027 rather than the 2026 5.65% top rate.
Montana Uses a Resident-Equivalent Tax Γ Montana-Source-Income Ratio
Montana Code Β§15-30-2104 gives a clear nonresident formula: calculate the tax as if the winner were a Montana resident for the whole year, then multiply that result by Montana-source income divided by total income from all sources.
The calculator compares Montana tax with the Powerball cash prize against Montana tax on entered other income alone.
The Montana Powerball cash prize is treated as Montana-source and entered other income as non-Montana-source. A separate residence-state tax or credit is not included.
