Powerball tickets are not sold in Alabama

Can You Play Powerball in Alabama?

Not from an Alabama retailer. Alabama residents can still buy Powerball while visiting a participating jurisdiction — and Alabama is unusual because four neighboring States sell it: Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee. Where you buy can change the claim, privacy and source-State tax path if the ticket wins.

The short answer

Can You Buy a Powerball Ticket in Alabama?

No — not inside Alabama. There is no Alabama State Lottery selling Powerball tickets. But the rule is about where the ticket is sold, not simply where the buyer lives.

Inside Alabama

No official sales

An Alabama convenience store, supermarket or other retailer cannot sell an official Alabama Powerball ticket because the State does not currently operate a Lottery participating in Powerball.

While visiting a participating State

Possible under its rules

Official Powerball guidance allows people from non-selling jurisdictions to buy while visiting a participating jurisdiction through a licensed or authorized retailer, subject to the selling jurisdiction's legal-age and purchase rules.

Do not confuse ticket State with residence State. An Alabama resident buying in Florida remains an Alabama resident. The Florida ticket controls the Lottery claim; Alabama residence still matters when the winner works out State income tax.

Alabama's distinctive Powerball problem

Four Borders, Four Powerball Rulebooks

Alabama touches four Powerball-selling States. That creates a useful choice for an ordinary ticket purchase — but a very important jurisdiction question if the ticket becomes a jackpot winner.

Ticket State ≠ residence State

Florida ticket

Florida does not impose an individual State income tax. For an Alabama resident, that can remove a ticket-State personal income-tax layer — but it does not remove Alabama's tax review because Alabama taxes its residents on income from all sources.

For prizes of $250,000 or more, Florida law temporarily keeps the winner's name confidential for 90 days after claim before that protection expires.

FloridaUseful for $0 ticket-State individual income tax; Alabama tax remains.
GeorgiaState tax can apply; Alabama's other-State credit can become important.
MississippiDo not assume the same tax result as Florida or Tennessee.
TennesseeNo Tennessee tax on Lottery income; Alabama residence still matters.
Which border is “best”? There is no single answer. Travel distance, ticket-State tax, privacy, claim procedures and Alabama's own resident tax can all matter. If the ticket wins a life-changing amount, use the rules in force for the exact State that sold it.

Online purchase warning

Can You Buy Powerball Online From Alabama?

Do not treat another State's Lottery website as a shortcut around Alabama's non-participation. Powerball says some lotteries sell online, but those services are limited to residents of the selling jurisdiction, and Internet or mail ticket sales across jurisdictional borders are restricted.

No Alabama Lottery app

Alabama has no official State Lottery website or app selling Powerball because there is no Alabama State Lottery participating in the game.

Another State's website is not automatically available

Being close to Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee does not make an Alabama resident eligible for that Lottery's online service. Follow the selling Lottery's residency and geolocation rules.

Avoid unverified workarounds

MLL does not present unverified couriers, mail arrangements or third-party sellers as a legal substitute for buying through an authorized Lottery channel.

If the ticket wins

What Happens If an Alabama Resident Wins Powerball?

A winning ticket bought outside Alabama is not claimed through Alabama. The selling Lottery validates and pays it, and then federal, ticket-State and Alabama-residence rules have to be separated.

01Buy in a participating jurisdiction
02Winning ticket belongs to that Lottery
03Claim under that Lottery's rules

Claim and privacy follow the selling Lottery

Where the ticket was sold controls validation, claim deadlines, claim forms and the selling jurisdiction's winner-disclosure rules. Alabama residence does not substitute Alabama rules for the Lottery that issued the ticket.

Tax then adds a second jurisdiction question

Alabama taxes resident income broadly, while a ticket State may separately tax or withhold on the prize. Alabama's credit for qualifying tax paid to another State can reduce double taxation, but the credit has limits and must be calculated rather than assumed.

Federal + ticket State + Alabama

How Would an Alabama Resident Be Taxed on a Powerball Win?

There are potentially three layers: federal income tax, the rules of the State that sold the ticket, and Alabama resident income tax. This page deliberately separates them instead of pretending one flat “State tax” number covers every border-State purchase.

1. Federal

Qualifying Lottery winnings can have 24% regular federal withholding. That is an initial payment toward tax, not the final federal liability. The calculator below estimates tax attributable to the prize using the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction.

2. Ticket State

Florida and Tennessee have no individual income-tax layer on Lottery winnings. Georgia and Mississippi can require a different source-State analysis, so MLL does not force an unsafe flat result into the calculator.

3. Alabama residence

Alabama residents report income from all sources, including Lottery and gambling winnings. A qualifying credit may be available for income tax paid to another State on the same income, subject to Alabama's credit limits.

If an Alabama resident won the current Powerball…

Choose where the ticket was bought. The federal estimate is numeric; the State section tells you when a cross-State review is still required rather than inventing false precision.

Alabama residence tax has not been deducted from the “after federal” figure. Alabama taxes resident income, and another-State credit treatment depends on where the ticket was bought and tax actually paid there.
Why no single Alabama “take-home” number here? With a Florida or Tennessee ticket, Alabama may be the only State individual income-tax layer. With a Georgia or Mississippi ticket, the other State can create source tax or withholding and Alabama may then allow a limited credit. The legally useful answer is a two-State calculation, not a guessed flat percentage.

Why Alabama is different

Why Doesn't Alabama Have Powerball?

Powerball participation normally runs through a participating Lottery. Alabama has no State Lottery, and its Constitution remains the central legal barrier that would have to change before an Alabama Lottery could be established and join a multi-State game.

Section 65 is the starting point

Current Alabama legislative materials describe Section 65 of the Constitution of Alabama of 2022 as prohibiting lotteries and gift enterprises. That is why “why doesn't Alabama just join Powerball?” is not simply an administrative question.

2026 proposals did not create a Lottery

HB448 proposed an official State Lottery including multi-State Lottery games. SB257 proposed a broader package including a State Lottery, casino-style gaming and sports wagering. The 2026 Regular Session adjourned on April 9, 2026 without either proposal becoming the law that establishes an Alabama State Lottery.

Could that change? Yes. Alabama has active political debate around Lottery authorization. But a proposal, bill introduction or constitutional-amendment plan is not the same as an operating Lottery. As of August 13, 2026, Alabama remains outside Powerball.

The other national game

What About Mega Millions in Alabama?

Alabama does not currently sell Mega Millions either. The same core distinction applies: an Alabama resident may encounter the game while visiting a participating Lottery jurisdiction, but the ticket must be bought under that jurisdiction's rules and any winning claim follows the Lottery that sold it.

Alabama Powerball questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you play Powerball in Alabama?

Powerball tickets are not sold by Alabama retailers because Alabama does not currently operate a State Lottery. An Alabama resident may buy a genuine Powerball ticket while visiting a participating jurisdiction from a retailer licensed or authorized there, subject to that jurisdiction's purchase and legal-age rules.

Does Alabama have a State Lottery?

No. Alabama does not currently operate a State Lottery. Section 65 of the Constitution of Alabama of 2022 remains the central constitutional restriction, although lottery proposals were introduced during the 2026 Regular Session.

Can Alabama residents buy Powerball in another State?

Yes. Alabama residents can buy while physically visiting a participating jurisdiction and using a retailer licensed or authorized by that jurisdiction, provided they meet its rules. Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee all border Alabama and participate in Powerball.

Can an Alabama resident buy Powerball in Florida?

Yes, while in Florida and buying through an authorized Florida Lottery retailer under Florida's rules. Florida has no individual State income tax, but an Alabama resident still has to consider Alabama resident income tax after a win.

Can an Alabama resident buy Powerball in Georgia?

Yes, while in Georgia and buying under Georgia Lottery rules. Georgia can impose State tax or withholding on a Georgia-source Lottery prize, while Alabama can also tax an Alabama resident's income and may allow a credit for qualifying tax paid to Georgia on the same income.

Can an Alabama resident buy Powerball in Mississippi or Tennessee?

Yes, while physically buying through an authorized retailer in the selling State and following that Lottery's rules. The claim, privacy and source-State tax position then follows the jurisdiction that sold the ticket, while Alabama residence tax is considered separately.

Can I buy Powerball online from Alabama?

Do not assume another State's website or app can be used from Alabama. Powerball says some lotteries offer online sales only to residents of their jurisdiction and that Internet or mail sales across jurisdictional borders are restricted. Alabama has no official State Lottery online Powerball service.

What happens if an Alabama resident wins Powerball in another State?

The winning ticket is validated and claimed under the rules of the Lottery jurisdiction that sold it. Federal tax applies, the selling State's tax or withholding rules may apply, and Alabama then considers the winner as an Alabama resident rather than treating the purchase State as the winner's residence.

Does Alabama tax out-of-State Powerball winnings?

Alabama Department of Revenue guidance says Alabama residents are subject to Alabama income tax on income from all sources and specifically lists lottery and gambling winnings as reportable income unless exempt. The exact Alabama result depends on the return and any available credit for qualifying income tax paid to another State on the same income.

Can Alabama give credit for tax paid to the State where the ticket was bought?

Potentially. Alabama's credit rule allows a resident credit for qualifying income tax actually paid to another State on income that is also included in Alabama income, subject to limits. The credit is generally limited to the lesser of the qualifying other-State tax and the Alabama tax attributable to the same income.

Is the 24% federal Powerball withholding the final federal tax?

No. The IRS regular withholding rate on qualifying lottery winnings is 24%, but final federal income tax is calculated through the progressive income-tax system. A very large cash prize can create additional federal tax beyond the amount initially withheld.

Which neighboring State is best for an Alabama resident to buy Powerball in?

There is no universal best choice. Florida and Tennessee do not impose an individual State income-tax layer on Lottery winnings, while Georgia and Mississippi can create different source-State tax or withholding issues. Privacy, claim procedure, travel practicality and Alabama's resident tax and credit rules can all matter.

Why doesn't Alabama have Powerball?

Alabama does not have a State Lottery, and Section 65 of the State Constitution has long restricted legislative authority over lotteries. Any move to establish an official State Lottery requires a legal and political change rather than simply joining Powerball administratively.

Could Alabama get a State Lottery in the future?

Yes, the law could change. HB448 and SB257 were introduced in the 2026 Regular Session with proposals that included a State Lottery, but the session adjourned on April 9, 2026 without those proposals becoming the law that would establish an Alabama Lottery. Alabama therefore remains a non-participating State as of this page's last check.
