POWERBALL COVERAGE LAB

Powerball Number Pool Coverage Calculator

Choose the main numbers you actually like playing, set your UK budget, and see how much of that number pool your tickets really cover.

A wheel organises your lines. It does not make the draw easier. A 10-number pool contains 252 different five-number combinations. Your budget decides how many of those combinations you can actually hold.
START WITH YOUR NUMBERS

“I like these numbers — what does my budget actually cover?”

That is the question this calculator answers. Select between 5 and 15 main numbers, then tell MLL how much you want to spend. We calculate every possible five-number combination inside your chosen pool and compare your ticket count with that total.

We also separate pool coverage from pool capture. Covering 20% of a favourite-number pool does not mean a 20% chance of matching five main numbers — the five winning main numbers must first all land inside your chosen pool.

BALANCED EXAMPLE LINES

Spread your selected numbers across the available lines

MLL favours combinations that keep individual-number usage and repeated pairs reasonably balanced. This is a coverage organiser, not a prediction model.

Important: Every valid Powerball line has the same jackpot probability. “Balanced” here only describes how evenly your chosen pool is distributed across your tickets.

THE SIMPLE VERSION

Why a 10-number pool creates 252 Powerball main lines

A standard Powerball line needs five different main numbers. If you choose ten favourite main numbers, there are 252 different ways to select five of them.

10
TEN FAVOURITES

Ten numbers do not mean ten combinations

The calculation is C(10,5) = 252. To hold every possible five-number combination from those ten numbers, you would need 252 lines. At £4 per UK line, that is £1,008.

If you spend £40 instead, you buy ten lines. Provided all ten main-number lines are different, that covers 10 ÷ 252 = 3.97% of your chosen pool.

STEP 1

Your pool must catch the five mains

For a pool strategy to produce a Match 5 main-number result, all five winning main numbers must first be among the numbers you selected.

STEP 2

Your tickets must hold that combination

Even if all five winning numbers are inside your pool, a partial wheel only succeeds if one of your purchased lines contains that exact five-number combination.

STEP 3

The Powerball is a separate field

Matching all five main numbers is not yet the jackpot. Your ticket must also contain the winning Powerball from the separate 1–26 field.

Pool coverage and pool capture multiply together

A useful way to understand a partial wheel is to separate it into two stages. First, what is the probability that the five winning main numbers all fall inside your chosen pool? Second, if they do, what percentage of that pool's five-number combinations did you buy?

Before duplicates, those two factors reconnect to exactly the same main-number probability as buying the same number of distinct ordinary lines. The wheel changes the shape of your coverage, not the amount of probability purchased.

FULL-WHEEL REALITY CHECK

How much does it cost to fully cover a Powerball number pool?

The cost rises very quickly because each extra favourite number creates many new five-number combinations.

Full main wheel does not mean full jackpot coverage

Buying every five-number combination inside a chosen pool guarantees that one of your lines contains the five winning main numbers if all five winners are inside that pool. The jackpot still also requires the correct 1–26 Powerball on the same line.

THE TRADE-OFF

Same budget, bigger pool: what changes?

A larger pool increases the chance the five winning mains are somewhere inside your favourites, but the same number of tickets covers a smaller percentage of that larger pool.

SMALLER POOL

More concentrated coverage

With a small number pool, ten tickets can cover a meaningful share of all possible five-number combinations inside it. The trade-off is that more of the 69-ball field sits outside your chosen pool.

Example: 7-number pool21 combinations
10-line pool coverage47.62%
Pool capture1 in 535,167
LARGER POOL

Broader favourites, thinner coverage

A larger pool includes more of the 69 possible main numbers, so it has a better chance of containing all five winners. But the number of internal combinations expands dramatically.

Example: 12-number pool792 combinations
10-line pool coverage1.26%
Pool capture1 in 14,190

There is no mathematically superior favourite-number pool size

If you ultimately buy ten distinct standard Powerball tickets, those ten tickets occupy ten complete outcomes regardless of whether they came from a 7-number wheel, a 12-number wheel or ten independently chosen lines.

The point of a pool is organisational: it lets you decide which numbers you want represented repeatedly and how concentrated you want your entry to be around them.

Why avoiding duplicate lines matters

Two identical complete tickets do not cover two different jackpot outcomes. They would simply win the same prize twice if that exact outcome occurred. If your aim is broader outcome coverage, distinct complete ticket combinations are the relevant count.

TRANSPARENT METHODOLOGY

How MLL calculates Powerball number-pool coverage

01

Current 5/69 matrix

Five main numbers are selected from 69. The total number of main-number combinations is C(69,5) = 11,238,513.

02

Pool combinations

A pool containing N numbers has C(N,5) possible five-number combinations. A 10-number pool therefore contains 252 main combinations.

03

Pool capture

The chance all five winning mains lie inside a pool is C(N,5) divided by C(69,5). It is separate from how many of the pool combinations you actually buy.

04

Budget coverage

Before duplicate main lines occur, pool coverage is the number of unique purchased main combinations divided by C(N,5).

05

Powerball kept separate

Each main-number combination can be paired with any of 26 Powerballs. The full jackpot space is 11,238,513 × 26 = 292,201,338 outcomes.

06

No prediction advantage

Balanced line generation spreads your chosen numbers and repeated pairs. It does not make any selected combination more likely to be drawn.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Powerball number pool coverage FAQs

How many combinations are in a 10-number Powerball pool?

There are 252 different five-number main combinations in a 10-number pool because C(10,5) = 252.

How much would it cost to cover every five-number combination from 10 numbers?

At £4 per UK Powerball line, 252 lines cost £1,008. That fully covers the five-number combinations inside the chosen 10-number pool, but each line still contains only one Powerball selection.

If I spend £40 on a 10-number pool, how much do I cover?

£40 buys ten UK Powerball lines. Ten distinct five-number combinations cover 10 of the pool's 252 possible combinations, or approximately 3.97%.

What does pool capture probability mean?

Pool capture is the probability that all five winning main numbers are somewhere inside the numbers you selected. For a 10-number pool, that probability is 252 divided by 11,238,513, approximately 1 in 44,597.

Does 3.97% pool coverage mean a 3.97% chance of matching five main numbers?

No. The five winning main numbers first need to fall inside your chosen pool. The 3.97% figure only describes how much of the 10-number pool's internal five-number combinations you bought.

Does a Powerball wheel improve my odds?

A wheel can organise distinct tickets and control how often chosen numbers appear. It does not change the probability attached to any valid ticket. Buying more distinct tickets increases total coverage because more distinct outcomes have been purchased.

Is a smaller number pool better?

A smaller pool is easier to cover deeply with a limited budget, but it contains fewer of the 69 possible main numbers. A larger pool has a better chance of containing all five winners, but far more internal combinations to cover.

What is the best Powerball pool size for £40?

There is no mathematically best favourite-number pool size. The choice controls how concentrated or broad your tickets are. Ten distinct £4 tickets still represent ten complete Powerball outcomes regardless of the pool used to organise them.

Why does the calculator allow only 5 to 15 main numbers?

That range keeps the tool focused on realistic favourite-number pools while showing how quickly full-wheel costs grow. A 15-number pool already contains 3,003 five-number combinations and costs £12,012 to cover once with one Powerball selection per line.

Should I rotate the Powerball or keep one fixed?

Rotating spreads your tickets across more Powerball values. Fixing one concentrates every main-number combination on the same Powerball. Neither makes an individual valid ticket more likely to win.

What does “balanced line generation” mean?

MLL tries to distribute your selected main numbers and repeated pairs reasonably evenly across the generated example lines. The label describes ticket organisation only and does not predict future results.

What are the odds of matching all five Powerball main numbers?

There are 11,238,513 possible sets of five main numbers from 69, so one specific five-number main combination has odds of 1 in 11,238,513 before considering the Powerball.

What are the Powerball jackpot odds?

There are 11,238,513 possible five-number main sets and 26 possible Powerballs, producing 292,201,338 complete jackpot outcomes.

Can two tickets in a wheel be identical?

They can, but identical complete tickets do not broaden jackpot outcome coverage. The MLL generator therefore avoids duplicate complete ticket combinations while possible.

Are the generated numbers predictions?

No. The generator uses only the numbers you selected and balances their use across example lines. It does not use historical results to claim that any line is more likely to win.

Accuracy note: This is a mathematical coverage and ticket-organisation tool, not a prediction system. Official National Lottery and Powerball rules and results prevail in the event of any discrepancy. Gambling should be treated as entertainment, not as a way to make money.
