What the extra €1 per line changes

Lotto Only vs Lotto + Plus Odds

Lotto Plus does not make one particular set of six numbers more likely to appear. It gives those same six numbers two additional independent draws to match against.

Lotto only

One Draw Per Line

1 in 25.4

Official overall chance of any main Lotto prize.

Main Lotto

€2 per line · plays from two lines (€4).

Lotto + Plus

Three Draws Per Line

1 in 8.5

Official overall chance of any prize when Lotto Plus is included.

Main Lotto
Plus 1
Plus 2

€3 per line including Plus · plays from two lines (€6).

The important distinction: buying Lotto Plus creates more separate draw opportunities for the same selected numbers. It does not change the randomness of any individual draw or make a chosen number “due”.

Why the amount can differ from the guide figure

Why Irish Lotto Prize Amounts Change

Most main Lotto prize tiers are variable. Their final payout depends on the money assigned to that prize category and how many winning entries share it.

Variable Main-Draw Prizes

Match 5 + Bonus, Match 5, Match 4 + Bonus, Match 4 and Match 3 + Bonus can pay more or less than the published guide values.

Two Fixed €4 Tiers

Match 3 and Match 2 + Bonus pay €4 under the current main Lotto rules.

Jackpot Is Shared

If more than one play matches all six main numbers, the available jackpot prize pool is shared equally between those winning plays.

The seventh ball matters in several lower tiers

How the Irish Lotto Bonus Ball Affects Prizes

Six main numbers are drawn first and a Bonus Ball is then selected from the remaining balls. The Bonus Ball does not help to win the jackpot, but it creates additional prize categories lower down the table.

Match 5 + Bonus

Five main numbers plus the Bonus Ball is the prize tier immediately below Match 6.

Match 4 + Bonus

Four main numbers plus the Bonus Ball is a separate tier from matching four main numbers without the Bonus Ball.

Match 2 + Bonus

Two main numbers plus the Bonus Ball is a winning combination even though matching only two main numbers is not.

When the top prize reaches its maximum

Jackpot Cap and Prize Redistribution

The current Irish Lotto jackpot is capped at €16 million. Once the jackpot is at the cap, money that cannot be added to the top prize can be redirected under the game rules to the next highest prize tier with at least one winner.

At the €16m Cap

The jackpot cannot increase beyond €16 million under the current 6/45 rules. Additional jackpot allocation can therefore increase a lower winning prize tier instead.

Fifth Capped Draw

If the fifth successive capped draw has no Match 6 winner, the jackpot prize pool rolls down to the next highest prize tier in that draw that has at least one winner.

Do not mix the old and current odds

Current 6/45 Odds vs the Previous 6/47 Game

Irish Lotto changed to six numbers from 1–45 in September 2026. Older 6/47 articles and calculators use different odds and should not be treated as current.

Any main Lotto prize: 1 in 25.4

Previous Game – 6/47

Historical results remain valid, but their odds belong to the old number matrix.

Common prize and probability questions

Irish Lotto Prizes & Odds FAQs

What are the odds of winning the Irish Lotto jackpot?

The current 6/45 jackpot odds are 1 in 8,145,060 for one Lotto line.

What are the odds of winning any Irish Lotto prize?

The Irish National Lottery publishes overall Lotto-only odds of 1 in 25.4 for any prize. With Lotto Plus included, the published overall chance of any prize is 1 in 8.5.

How much do you win for three Irish Lotto numbers?

Match 3 pays a fixed €4 under the current main Lotto rules.

How much do you win for two numbers and the Bonus Ball?

Match 2 + Bonus also pays a fixed €4 in the current main Lotto game.

Why is the Match 5 prize different from one draw to another?

Match 5 is a variable prize tier. The actual amount depends on the prize fund available for that tier and the number of winning entries sharing it.

Does buying more lines improve the odds?

Different valid lines give you more combinations in the draw, so the chance of a win across all of those entries increases. They do not make any individual six-number combination more likely to be drawn.

Are Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2 odds the same?

Yes. Under the current 6/45 game, both Plus draws use the same match categories, odds and published prize amounts.

Age restriction and responsible play

Irish National Lottery Games Are for Adults Aged 18+

Lottery odds remain long even when more than one line is entered. If you choose to play, keep spending within a budget you can comfortably afford and treat the calculator as a way to understand probability, not a prediction tool.

Understand the Odds

Lottery outcomes are random. Historical results, “hot” numbers and previous losses do not make a future combination more likely.
