From €2 million to the current jackpot

How the Irish Lotto Jackpot Grows

The jackpot starts from a guaranteed minimum of €2 million. If nobody matches all six main numbers, the jackpot prize pool normally carries forward to the next draw until it is won or reaches the €16 million cap.

1

Jackpot Starts From €2m

After a jackpot win, the next Lotto jackpot is no less than €2 million.

2

No Match 6 Winner

If nobody matches all six main numbers, the jackpot prize pool carries forward under the rollover rules.

3

Jackpot Reaches €16m

The current rules cap the Lotto jackpot at €16 million. It cannot keep increasing beyond that amount.

4

Capped Draw Rules Apply

The jackpot can remain at the cap for no more than five successive capped draws before the roll-down rule applies.

How the €16 Million Irish Lotto Jackpot Cap Works

Once the jackpot reaches €16 million, extra money that would otherwise increase the top prize is redirected to the next highest prize tier with at least one winner. The jackpot itself stays at €16 million until it is won or reaches the fifth capped draw.

The fifth capped draw

What Happens in an Irish Lotto Will Be Won Draw?

The fifth successive draw at the €16 million jackpot cap is the final capped draw. If at least one ticket matches all six numbers, the jackpot is shared by the Match 6 winner or winners as normal.

If Match 6 Is Won

The €16 million jackpot prize pool is paid to the Match 6 winning ticket or shared equally if there is more than one winning play.

If Nobody Matches All Six

The jackpot prize pool rolls down to the next highest prize tier in that draw that has at least one winner.

After the Jackpot Is Distributed

The following Lotto jackpot returns to at least the €2 million minimum under the current game rules.

Extra prize money when the top prize is full

Where Does the Money Go When the Jackpot Is at the Cap?

Reaching the cap does not mean the jackpot simply keeps accumulating off-screen. The current rules redirect jackpot-allocation money that cannot be added above €16 million.

When a Rollover Would Push the Jackpot Above €16m

Enough money is added to bring the next jackpot up to the €16 million cap. The amount above the cap is reallocated to the next highest prize tier in that draw that has at least one winner.

When the Jackpot Is Already at €16m

No additional money is added to the jackpot while it remains capped. The portion of the prize fund that would normally feed the jackpot is instead added to the next highest winning prize tier.

It Is Not Always Match 5 + Bonus

The rules refer to the next highest prize tier with at least one winner. If nobody wins Match 5 + Bonus, the reallocated money can move to the next eligible prize category below it.

How to Win the Irish Lotto Jackpot

To win or share the Irish Lotto jackpot, one line must match all six main numbers drawn. The Bonus Ball is not needed for the jackpot.

Choose Six Numbers From 1–45

The current game uses six different numbers from 1 to 45. You can choose them yourself or use a random Quick Pick.

Match All Six Main Numbers

The jackpot odds for one valid Lotto line are 1 in 8,145,060 under the current 6/45 game.

Multiple Winners Share the Jackpot

If more than one winning play matches all six main numbers, the jackpot prize pool is shared equally between the winning plays.

Current rules began in September 2026

Irish Lotto Jackpot Rules Before and After September 2026

The current €16 million cap belongs to the 6/45 Irish Lotto game introduced in September 2026. Older results, articles and jackpot records can reflect the previous 6/47 rules and should not be used as the current jackpot-cap rules.

Seeing an Older Jackpot Figure Above €16 Million?

That can be historically correct. The current official Lotto 6/45 rules set the jackpot cap at €16 million, so older Irish Lotto jackpot records are not evidence that today's jackpot can rise above the current cap.
