Can You Tell a Winning Scratchcard Before Scratching It?

On a properly designed physical scratchcard, the visible ticket should not tell you whether the hidden play area is a winner.

Ticket numbers, pack numbers, artwork, exposed barcodes and printing marks all have legitimate operational purposes. But lottery security standards specifically require the winning status to remain non-predictable from what you can see before the concealed area is revealed.

The whole physical instant-ticket model depends on that fact. A shop needs to identify the game, pack and ticket for inventory. A lottery needs to track stock. But those administrative identifiers should not allow a player or retailer to infer the hidden winning result.

WLA-SCS:2024 makes this explicit by requiring non-predictability of a ticket's winning status based on visible information.

The Winner Already Exists — It Is Just Supposed to Be Hidden

A physical scratchcard does not become a winner when the silver coating comes off. The result was already printed into the ticket during manufacture.

Security therefore has to solve a difficult problem: allow the ticket to be individually tracked and later validated while preventing ordinary visible information from revealing that pre-existing result.
