How many numbers do you need to win Australian Powerball?
The smallest winning combination is two main numbers plus the Powerball. That is Division 9.
You can also win without the Powerball. Matching five main numbers wins Division 7, six main numbers wins Division 4, and all seven main numbers without the Powerball wins Division 2.
What changes if you buy 10 different games?
More different combinations give you more chances in the same draw. They do not make any individual combination more likely to be drawn.
So 10 different games give you 10 times the Division 1 chance of one game. But you are also buying 10 games. And the chance is still very small.
Playing the exact same combination twice is different. You still have only one distinct number combination that can match the draw.
What do PowerHit and Powerpik change?
PowerHit is The Lott name for an entry that covers every Powerball number for the main-number combination being played. Lotterywest uses the name Powerpik for the corresponding WA option.
That means the Powerball itself is covered. But it does not guarantee a prize. You still need the required main winning numbers, including all seven for Division 1.
Do some Powerball numbers have better odds?
No. A valid game has the same chance before the draw whether the numbers are birthdays, QuickPick numbers, hot numbers or numbers that have not appeared for months.
Past results can be interesting to analyse. But they do not change the probability of the next independent draw.

The overall chance of winning any of the nine prize divisions is about 1 in 44 for one standard game.
How many numbers do you need to win a Powerball prize in Australia?

Can you win Australian Powerball without matching the Powerball?
Yes. Divisions 2, 4 and 7 do not require the Powerball. Division 2 needs all seven winning numbers, Division 4 needs six winning numbers and Division 7 needs five winning numbers.
What are the Division 1 odds if I buy 10 different Powerball games?
Ten different standard games give a Division 1 chance of 1 in 13,449,040 for that draw. That is ten times the chance of one standard game, but it also means buying ten games.
Does PowerHit or Powerpik guarantee a Powerball win?
No. PowerHit and Powerpik cover the Powerball number for the relevant main-number combinations. You still need the required winning main numbers to land a prize, including all seven for Division 1.
Are Australian Powerball prize amounts fixed?
Division 1 is a jackpotting prize pool. Lower-division amounts can vary by draw because they depend on the prize pool and the number of winning entries. Check the completed draw result for the amount actually paid.
Do hot, cold or overdue numbers improve Powerball odds?
No. Every valid standard game has the same chance before an independent draw. Past frequency does not make a valid number more or less likely to appear next.
