Why A$111.97 million is not the biggest individual Oz Lotto win
Oz Lotto’s 2012 record is a useful example of why a jackpot headline and the amount received by one winning entry are not necessarily the same thing.
Draw 977 on 6 November 2012 was advertised at A$100 million. Heavy ticket sales increased the final Division 1 pool to A$111,972,151.04. Four entries matched all seven winning numbers, giving each entry A$27,993,037.76.
By contrast, Draw 1616 in February 2025 had one Division 1 winning entry. The whole A$100 million prize therefore went to that single entry, making it the largest individual Oz Lotto prize despite the total pool being smaller than the 2012 record.

Draw 1626 had one Division 1 winning entry, but that entry belonged to a Queensland syndicate. Fifteen people ultimately shared the win, illustrating why one winning entry does not necessarily mean one person.

One entry took the entire Draw 1633 jackpot. Later official reporting identified the ticketholder as a Tasmanian man, making it the biggest lottery prize to land in Tasmania.

The official results count tickets or entries that satisfy Division 1. If one syndicate ticket matches all seven winning numbers, the result is still recorded as one Division 1 winning entry.

What happens when a winning Oz Lotto ticket is unregistered?
An operator can usually contact the holder of a registered online or player-card entry once a major win is confirmed. With an unregistered retail ticket, the operator may know the selling outlet but not the identity of the person holding the ticket.
That is why some Oz Lotto stories begin as searches for a “mystery winner”. The A$50 million Leumeah ticket in October 2019 was unregistered, so lottery officials initially had no way to contact the ticketholder directly.
The selling location should also not be treated automatically as the winner’s home address. A ticket can be purchased by a visitor, commuter, syndicate member or someone shopping outside their local area.
