Instant Scratch-Its
This is The Lott’s official product name. “Scratchies” is the everyday term, but claims, expiry and operator rules still follow the jurisdiction where the physical ticket was bought.
Lotterywest Scratch’n’Win
WA uses its own Lotterywest product range. Tickets are sold in-store, each game has its own prize structure and expiry date, and Lotterywest publishes prize counts and top-prize status for individual games.
Scratchies are printed prize inventories, not draw lotteries
Every scratchie series starts with a defined number of physical tickets and a defined prize structure. The ticket’s game code, price, prize table, overall odds, top-prize count and closure or expiry information belong to that specific game — not to scratchies as a whole.
That is why saying “scratchies have odds of about 1 in 4” can be technically true and still tell you almost nothing about the top prize. A ticket might have overall odds near 1 in 4 because many prizes simply return the ticket price or a small multiple of it, while the top prize can be hundreds of thousands or more to one.
There is another important difference from a weekly draw: a scratchie series can remain visible or available even after one or more top prizes have already been won. The operator’s current game page matters.
How to understand a scratchie before checking the symbols
Game identity
Use the exact title and game code. Similar-looking tickets can have different prize tables.
Ticket price
Price does not by itself tell you the top-prize odds or chance of any prize.
Overall odds
This covers every winning prize level combined across the printed game.
Top-prize odds
Use the printed ticket count and top-prize count, not the overall odds.
Closure / expiry
A winning physical ticket can become unclaimable if the jurisdiction’s deadline passes.
Scratchie odds decoder
Enter the printed game size, total number of winning tickets and number of top prizes. The calculator separates the chance of any prize from the chance of the top prize.
This explains the printed game at launch. It does not tell you the live probability of the next physical ticket because sold, claimed and unsold ticket inventory is not fully observable to a player.
Can a scratchie stay on sale after the top prize has gone?
Yes. Both major operator systems warn that top prizes can be won before every ticket in the game is sold.
That does not follow. A printed series can continue to have unsold tickets after one or more top prizes have already been won and claimed.
Lotterywest individual Scratch’n’Win pages show top-prize counts, how many have been won and claimed, full prize odds and game expiry. The Lott also warns that prize amounts can be exhausted before all tickets are sold.

Australian scratchie checking & claim helper
Choose the purchase jurisdiction. Scratchie claim periods attach to the place of purchase and, for instant games, are generally measured from the game closure date rather than the day you scratched the ticket.

Scanning does not replace the original scratchie
The Lott currently supports camera scanning for $1, $2, $4, $5, $10, $15 and $20 Instant Scratch-Its. A result can be shown on screen, but the original physical winning ticket must still be kept for verification and claim.
Lotterywest directs players to reveal the barcode and use an in-store ticket checker if they are unsure whether a ticket has won.
Lotterywest says a Scratch’n’Win top prize of $5,000 or more must be claimed at Head Office and is subject to a 14-day validation period.
What is the Instant Scratch-Its 2nd Chance Draw?
The Lott currently runs a monthly 2nd Chance Draw for eligible non-winning Instant Scratch-Its tickets. Its help guidance says eligible tickets valued at $2 or more can be entered using the 2nd Chance code on the physical ticket.
The promotion is separate from the original scratchie prize structure. Entering a losing ticket does not alter the printed odds or turn it into a winning instant ticket; it creates a separate promotional entry under its own terms and deadlines.
Is one position in a scratchie book more likely to win?
A run of losses does not make the next ticket due. The printed odds describe the full game inventory, not a guarantee that prizes occur at regular intervals in one book or retailer.
Its current Scratch’n’Win guidance says winning and non-winning tickets are randomly distributed across Western Australia and there is no relationship between a ticket’s position in a book and whether it wins.
For scratchies, current game status matters more than a generic “results” page
There is no national scratchie result draw to reproduce. The safest workflow is to identify the exact game, read the printed rules, check the operator’s current game/expiry information and retain the complete original ticket until any prize is fully validated.

Are Instant Scratch-Its and scratchies the same thing?
“Scratchies” is the common Australian term. The Lott’s official product name is Instant Scratch-Its, while Lotterywest calls its Western Australian range Scratch’n’Win.
What are the odds of winning on an Australian scratchie?
There is no single odds figure for every ticket. The Lott says overall Instant Scratch-Its odds are generally around 1 in 4, while every specific game has its own overall odds and much longer odds for individual large prizes.
Can a scratchie top prize already be gone while tickets are still on sale?
Yes. Operator guidance warns that all prize amounts, including top prizes, can be won before every ticket in a game has been sold.
Can I scan an Instant Scratch-Its ticket with The Lott app?
The Lott currently supports barcode checking for specified Instant Scratch-Its price points through its website or app. A winning physical ticket must still be retained for verification and claim.
Do scratchie prizes expire?
Yes. The deadline depends on the jurisdiction and the specific game closure or expiry date. Western Australia publishes a separate prize expiry for each Scratch’n’Win game.
Does the position of a scratchie in the book affect its chance of winning?
Lotterywest explicitly says there is no relationship between a ticket’s position in the book and whether it is a winner. Winning and non-winning tickets are randomly distributed.
How old do you need to be to buy scratchies in Australia?
In The Lott jurisdictions the minimum purchase age is 18. Lotterywest requires players to be at least 16 in Western Australia.
