Australian Powerball at a glance
Powerball is one national Australian draw, but tickets are sold through different licensed lottery routes. Queensland, New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory use the lottery brands available through The Lott. Western Australian Powerball entries are sold through Lotterywest.
That distinction matters for practical details such as ticket sales cut-offs, online membership, minimum age and prize claims. The winning numbers and national Division 1 pool are shared across the participating Australian jurisdictions.

›How Australian Powerball works
Each standard game contains seven main-number selections from 1 to 35 and one separate Powerball selection from 1 to 20. In the draw, seven winning numbers are drawn from the main barrel and one Powerball is drawn from the second barrel.
Division 1 requires all seven winning numbers plus the Powerball in the same game. There are eight lower prize divisions as well, with the smallest winning combination being two winning numbers plus the Powerball.
You can choose your own numbers or use a randomly generated QuickPick/Slikpik. The selection method does not alter the probability of a valid individual combination being drawn.
The official game currently starts with a minimum Division 1 jackpot of $4 million. If Division 1 is not won, the top prize can roll to a higher amount for the next draw.
Thursday draw time and ticket cut-offs
Powerball is a Thursday-night lottery. The Lott currently publishes a 7:30pm AEST draw close for its jurisdictions. Lotterywest currently lists a 6:00pm AWST Thursday close in Western Australia.
Those times are expressed in different time zones, which becomes particularly important during daylight-saving months. If you are entering close to the deadline, use the operator shown on your ticket or account rather than converting from another state's clock.
PowerHit, Powerpik and standard entries
A normal Powerball game uses one Powerball selection. A PowerHit entry in The Lott jurisdictions covers every possible Powerball number for the relevant main-number selection, so the drawn Powerball is included. Lotterywest uses the Powerpik name for the corresponding WA concept.
Covering all Powerball numbers buys more combinations; it does not make any individual main-number combination more likely to be drawn. System entries can cover additional main-number combinations as well, which increases both the number of combinations entered and the cost.

Australian Powerball jackpots, winners and records
Division 1 is a prize pool. If more than one winning entry matches all seven winning numbers and the Powerball, the Division 1 pool is shared between those entries. Unlike the familiar US Powerball headline, the Australian advertised jackpot is not a 30-year annuity figure.
The $200 million draw in February 2024 set the Australian lottery jackpot record and was shared by winning entries from New South Wales and Queensland. The Lott's FY24 game summary also records a $150 million Adelaide Powerball winner as Australia's biggest individual lottery winner for that financial-year record set.
Australian Powerball is not US Powerball
The two games share a name but not a lottery system. Australian Powerball uses seven main numbers from 1–35 plus one Powerball from 1–20 and is drawn on Thursday. US Powerball uses a different number matrix, different draw days, a cash-versus-annuity jackpot structure and different tax rules.

Powerball tickets, tax and claiming a win
In The Lott jurisdictions, official Powerball entries can be bought through participating retailers, thelott.com or The Lott app where eligible. Western Australia uses Lotterywest stores, its website and app. Online eligibility, account verification and minimum playing age follow the relevant jurisdiction.
Ordinary Australian lottery prizes are generally not declared as income, although interest and investment income generated after a win can be taxable. Claim routes also differ by state and by whether a ticket was bought online, registered to an account or purchased as an unregistered paper ticket.

How many numbers do you need for Australian Powerball?

What are the odds of winning Australian Powerball Division 1?
The official Division 1 odds are 1 in 134,490,400 for one standard game. Lotterywest lists the overall chance of winning any Powerball prize at about 1 in 44.
What is PowerHit or Powerpik?
PowerHit is The Lott term for an entry that covers all possible Powerball numbers for the relevant main-number combination. Lotterywest calls the corresponding WA entry Powerpik. This guarantees the drawn Powerball is covered, but the required main numbers still need to match for Division 1.
What happens if two people win the Powerball jackpot?
Division 1 is shared between the winning entries. For example, the record $200 million draw on 1 February 2024 produced two Division 1 winning entries, each receiving $100 million.
Are Australian Powerball winnings taxed?
